How to customize EMC ITOI Dashboard

For those who leverage EMC’s IT Operations Intelligence Dashboard, there are ways to customize how the dashboard is loaded and data is presented.  One of those methods we are going to cover here is the webconsole.properties file.

Traditionally, when the Dashboard is opened (via http://<address>:8080/webconsole), it loads HTML which has two frames, one which calls a top banner and the other is the main HTML (usually globalConsoleWithMaps.html).

The globalConsoleWithMaps.html in turn, loads various jar files (applets) which make up the Dashboard.  As part of the applet being loaded, there is a property file called webconsole.properties which holds various configuration options. This file is in the same directory where the HTML/applets reside.

All of these configuration options are covered in the EMC Ionix Service Assurance Manager Documentation Portfolio, and specifically within the portfolio, the EMC Ionix Service Assurance Manager Dashboard – Configuration Guide. The section you want to look at starts on page 37 and identifies the various viewlet properties you can insert in the webconsole.properties file for further customizations.

The ones that I really like to use to make life easier for my end users who leverage the Dashboard are the following:

smarts.remote.broker=<broker name>:426

com.smarts.autoAttachDM=<SAM-DOMAIN-NAME>

Now, the first one comes out of the box and simply states that the Dashboard, when loaded, shall connect to the broker specified.  The second, though, is not out of the box. What it does is it pre-populates the Domain Manager field with a domain name of your choice. This is very useful because the usual consumers of the Dashboard (operations staff, management, etc) don’t really care about any other domain name in the broker listing, other than the one they need to connect to. In all cases, this will be the SAM domain.

So there you go, take a look at the documentation, there are various properties that can allow further customization of the Dashboard!  Enjoy.
